Adirondack Chairs
Sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin
WESTPORT EAST is pleased to announce their new 2009 range of Adirondack Chairs.
Available from the start of May, two of Westport East’s new variations will be of particular interest to NABHO Members and it is these that are highlighted here.
For those of you not familiar with the unique features inherent in this iconic design of outdoor chair we list them below along with the added benefits supplied by Westport East Adirondacks.
The original 1904 design for these chairs had three main integral features that still define these chairs today: -
- The 120° sitting angle, which the designer, Thomas Lee, identified was the most comfortable for people of all ages,
- Wider more comfortable arm rests that act as small tables
- The frame design where the seat side and the back leg are all of one common stay, or length of timber. This gives a sturdy and robust structure to the chair.
To these inbuilt features the Westport East chair adds
- The ability for the chair to fold thus enabling compact storage. The folding requires the removal of two wooden pegs that lock the front legs to the seat frame when the chair is in use. Once the pegs are removed the seat back can be lifted and the chair folded. This process will naturally tuck the front legs up adjacent to the seat frame. The same two wooden pegs are used to lock the seat in the folded compact position.
- The heels of the back legs are made flat so the chair can be stood upright and stable when in the stored form
These simple but elegant added features enable the Adirondack chair to be considered as an ideal choice for the Beach Hut owner and out of doors enthusiast.

Hutters’ Adirondack
The first of the featured chairs is the Hutters’ Adirondack, model WPE-AG-004. A model that is new this year. Whilst incorporating the wide 17cm arm rests, The Hutters’ Adirondack chair also offers a stow-away ottoman (foot and leg rest). This chair has been made light enough to accommodate the ottoman by combining sustainably-sourced hardwoods for structure with sustainably-sourced softwood for the slats and other components of the chair. This gracious chair allows the ottoman, or foot rest, to be pulled out from under the seat and returned and put away after use or when being packed away for storage. The Hutters Adirondack chair is stylish, comfortable, practical and functional seating solution for the Beach Hut Owner.

These chairs have no retractable ottoman feature but have a slightly more elegant appearance with a superior look. The screws are covered with wooden tops, the hardware is stainless steel and the finish is natural oil. The 15cm wide oak or eucalyptus arm rests are functional and elegant. To see whether there is a demand for them, this season we have produced a small number of chairs in Traffic Light Green and have only selected the Hutters’ Adirondack for this trial.
All NABHO members are entitled to a 10% discount from the Full Retail Price on either of these chair types. Westport East is proud to be both a corporate member and to be endorsed by NABHO, patrons of the British Seaside ethos.
