A very warm welcome to Essex County Council as our latest Local Authority Member
Essex, the ancient Saxon county on the doorstep of London, boasts a strong maritime heritage. This diverse and contrasting coastline stretches to over 350 miles making it one of the longest of any English county. Coastal towns such as Maldon, Burnham, Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea all come to life with yachts, fishing and watersports. Along the estuaries and just inland from the fishing towns, the environment is wild, undisturbed and of great importance for nature conservation. Well known seaside resorts along the east coast include Clacton, Frinton and Walton to the north of the county and Southend at the mouth of the river Thames. Southend has established a reputation for an exciting calendar of events throughout the year whilst in Clacton the emphasis is on traditional family entertainment; both resorts are famous for their parks and gardens.

Dr Kathryn Ferry Joins NABHO's Executive Committee
We are pleased to announce that Dr Kathryn Ferry has joined NABHO`s Executive committee. Kate is our historical and cultural heritage advisor and will also be contributing the foreword to our official member’s magazine Hutters.
About Kathryn
Dr Kathryn Ferry is an architectural historian who specialises in studying and working with buildings from the Victorian period. After graduating from university she began taking day trips to the East Anglian coast and discovered a passion for beach huts. Since then she has been researching their history and, in the summer of 2002, went on a two-month journey around the English coast to record the current state of the nation’s beach huts.
Kathryn has contributed to many newspaper articles on the subject of beach huts and is now considered a leading expert. She has appeared on radio and TV, including the popular BBC 2 series ‘Coast.’
About ‘Sheds on the Seashore’
Following on from her research, Kathryn is writing a book entitled ‘Sheds on the Seashore: from Bathing Machines to Beach Huts’. This book tells the fascinating and often comic story of how the humble beach hut evolved from a changing cubicle on wheels into a highly desirable piece of seaside property. Its history goes back further in time that people imagine but, as the quirky human stories from Kathryn’s travels demonstrate, it remains a vital and much-loved icon of the seaside.
